Regional Social Science & Human-Dimension Research Proposals (Sea Grant)

The California, University of Southern California, Oregon, and Washington Sea Grant programs are jointly interested in coordinated research efforts that bring together researchers from across the West Coast region to address specific social science and human-dimension issues of regional importance that align with the goals of the National Sea Grant College Program.  The program anticipates being able to fund between two and four regional projects for the 2014-2016 biennium. Individual projects should not request more than $100,000 per year (including indirect costs) from any relevant state Sea Grant program (total project costs can exceed $100K per year if more than one state Sea Grant program is involved). Projects will be selected through an open, competitive, peer-review process.

Ocean Fund seeks grant inquiries

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. established the Ocean Fund in 1966 to support marine conservation organizations working to preserve the world's oceans.  Ocean Fund grants are made to nonprofit groups and institutions conducting activities (e.g., research, education, and innovative technologies) directly related to marine conservation.  Organizations seeking grants from the Ocean Fund are encouraged to e-mail the fund throughout the year to introduce their organization, mission, programs, and potential projects relevant to thefund's mission.

Amount: $20,000 - $40,000

Mountaineers Foundation provides funding for Pacific Northwest

The Mountaineers Foundation provides support to organizations and agencies working to preserve the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the Pacific Northwest.

The foundation provides support for modest, short-term projects. Eligible projects include studies that will yield new data aimed at protecting Northwest wilderness and wildlife; biological, economic, legal, or policy studies; direct educational programs and materials related to environmental preservation; lectures, conferences, and seminars; written or audiovisual awareness materials; curriculum or other instructional materials; publication of conference proceedings, journal articles; seed or pilot studies that can be continued with funding from other sources; and selected capital improvement projects (e.g., restoration; assistance in purchasing equipment/materials).

The foundation funds selected projects led by 501(c)(3) or other nonprofit organizations, by certain agencies such as libraries and schools, and, occasionally, by individuals.

Amount:  $5,000

NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology & Mathematics (S-STEM)

The National Science Foundation announces a request for proposals (RFP) from universities interested in providing scholarships for academically talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate or graduate-level degree in science, technology or mathematics. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information, and managing the S-STEM project at the institution.

Amount: $600,000 to be spread across 5 years

Due date: 09/14/09 (notice of intent due 08/11/09)

According to NSF, "The S-STEM program emphasizes the importance of recruiting students to science and engineering disciplines, mentoring and supporting students through degree completion, and partnering with employers to facilitate student career placement in the STEM workforce. Participating institutions are expected to support the goals of the S-STEM program including:

• Improved educational opportunities for students;
• Increased retention of students to degree achievement;
• Improved student support programs at institutions of higher education;
• Increased numbers of well-educated and skilled employees in technical areas of national need.

Students to be awarded scholarships must demonstrate academic talent and financial need. In addition, they must be US citizens, permanent residents, nationals, or refugees.
